Hydro from Norway Finds More Leakage at Brazilian Alumina Plant

Norsk Hydro, a Norwegian alumina manufacturer, said on Monday that Brazilian authorities have discovered additional leaks at its Alunorte alumina refinery.

Last month, Brazil asked the company to suspend the production of the plant, causing leakage due to heavy rainfall, prompting the company to issue force majeure.

Hydro said the authorities found in an investigation that untreated rainwater discharge points were found on the roof of a coal mine storage warehouse.

Chief Executive Officer Svein Richard Brandtzaeg stated, "We have discharged untreated rain and surface water into the Para River. It is completely unacceptable and contrary to the spirit of the company."

The company apologized to local groups on Friday and announced that it invested 500 million Norwegian kroner in water treatment systems to prevent the spill from happening again.

The company once again apologized on Monday and said that it will accept an environmental agency to carry out continuous review, and the company's internal audit agency will be involved.
