China Mainly Imports Bauxite
China mainly imports bauxite from Australia, Guinea, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Solomon Islands. As Indonesia restricted the export of bauxite, Guinea began to become the main supplier, surpassing Australia in 2017, becoming the first source country for the supply of bauxite in China.
According to customs statistics, China imported a total of 68.55 million tons of bauxite in 2017, an increase of 32.55% year-on-year. Among them, 27.73 million tons were imported from Guinea, a year-on-year increase of 132.35%, accounting for more than 40% of China's total imports.
In 2017, Guinea’s Minister of Mines stated that in order to meet China’s demand for bauxite, the country’s bauxite production in that year was planned to reach 33 million tons, and by 2020 it will reach 60 million tons. In 2015, the bauxite production in Guinea was only about 19 million tons.
