In 2016, Australia remained the largest supplier of bauxite in China. Its export volume was approximately 21.3 million tons, an increase of 8.81% year-on-year, accounting for 41.1% of China's total imports. Rio Tinto has announced that the production of bauxite in 2016 will be 47.7 million tons, which is higher than the target of 47 million tons given in October last year and is 9% higher than that of 2015. The annual production of Weipa Mine and Goff Mine recorded a record increase of 6% and 21% respectively. Strong output and robust demand from China enabled Rio Tinto to export 29.3 million tons of bauxite to third parties in 2016, up 10% year-on-year, with shipments in the fourth quarter up 12% year-on-year. Rio Tinto announced that its alumina production in 2016 was 8.2 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5%. Rio Tinto recently confirmed that the 2017 bauxite production target will be 48-50 million tons, alumina production is expected to be 800-820 million tons, and aluminum production is expected to be 3.5-3.7 million tons.
